4 Tips for a Happy Mother's Day While Your Sailor is Deployed

Mother's Day is just around the corner.  It's the day when we moms are finally recognized for all we do throughout the year.  Sounds great if your Sailor is around to orchestrate breakfast in bed or dinner out, but if he's deployed?  It's just another day you have to take care of everyone else.

Mother's Day without your Sailor doesn't have to be miserable.  My four tips for a happy day will put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.  You might even forget your Sailor's away if you follow my advice.  (Okay--maybe that's too much to expect, but it is possible to have a special day.)

1.  Think positive!  Don't focus on what you won't be getting.  (And really, is breakfast in bed worth having to deal with the sticky pillows and crumbs in the sheets?  I didn't think so!)  Sure it's tough being left home with the kids for months at a time, but the reunions make it all worth it.

2.  Treat yourself!  I've always liked to celebrate Mother's Day with the person who calls me mom, so for me it's usually lunch out with my son, but don't feel guilty if you need some grown up time.  It's your day.  Do whatever floats your boat.

3.  Plan ahead!  My worst Mother's Day involved driving from restaurant to restaurant with my young son getting cranky in the back seat.  Every place was full guessed was Mother's Day.  You know it's coming and you know you deserve a little indulgence.  Spare yourself a visit to Self Pity City and make reservations ahead of time.

4.  Avoid disappointment!  If gifts are more your thing, don't leave your shopping until the last minute.  One year all I wanted was a simple bouquet of supermarket flowers.  Could I find one the morning of Mother's Day?  Of course not!  Everybody else in the world had the same idea for their mom.  If you want something traditional like flowers or chocolates, shop early while there's still some to be had.

Happy Mother's Day to all the great moms who  keep things together while their Sailors are away!  The care and effort you put into the family make it possible for your Sailors to do their important work.
