Laughing Despite Your Fears of Deployment

So there you are mentally preparing for a six to eight month deployment, one of the hardest things you’ve ever done or will ever do. It’s something most husbands and wives can’t even imagine doing. It’s a time when you will be stressed and overwhelmed and alone. It’s a time when you will almost constantly worry for your husband’s welfare and safety as he goes into a war zone. Yet, you prepare yourself, you toughen up, and just as you think you are ready – that you are strong enough to handle this – your husband hands you this paperwork – death paperwork – the paperwork of doom!

Who would you like to be contacted in the case of your husband’s untimely demise?

Who are the three people in the entire world you would like to be there when you get that news?

Who is the one person you would HATE to have there?

Who would you like to be contacted in the case of your own         death?

For each of these questions, you have to think about who you would seriously want to know, to tell you, to be there when you find out, or how they respond if you died. You cannot not imagine it happening. You can’t avoid seeing it in your mind: how you would react, how whoever you list on that form would react, what you would do, and how freaking horrible it would be. Don’t you just wish you could list answers like:

PASS!

Who are the three people in the entire world you would like to be there when you get that news?

Somebody Willing to Take a Punch; Madonna; The Most Recent Winner of the World’s Cutest Puppy Competition.

Who is the one person you would hate to have there?

A Clown.

Who would you like to be contacted in the case of your own untimely death?

Oh Come On! Really? My death too? You know what – I did have ‘face my own mortality’ on my to-do list. Thanks. Now I can check that one off.

And why is it that our husbands usually wait to give us this paperwork the month before a deployment? Seriously? You thought this would be the best time for this? We couldn’t have done this a few months ago?

Then he kisses you on the forehead and says, “Don't worry baby. Nothing bad will actually happen. I’ll be fine.”

Thanks ... I feel so much better now.

Well this made me laugh about it, so I hope if you've had to fill the paperwork of doom out recently that you can laugh about it too:

I dated and married my husband in 2004 when I was 19. I felt like an outsider for the first half of our marriage. He didn't understand what I needed to know about the Navy, and I didn't know what to ask.

After ten years of learning in the Navy, I founded Unhinged & Empowered. I wanted to spread the knowledge that I needed when I was new, to reveal what took years for me to learn.

In addition to being a Navy Wife, I am also a novelist. I write historical women's fiction.

My first novel A White Room debuted in 2013 and is about a woman forced to sacrifice her own ambitions of becoming a nurse to marry a man who can save her destitute family. He moves her to a strange, small town where she slowly succumbs to madness until she stumbles on an opportunity to nurse to the poor despite the fact that her husband prosecutes unlicensed practitioners.
